The scale of a county job should have been stated clearly in the advertisement for that job. If it isn't you can ask for the information because it would fall under the Freedom of Information Act.

Keep in mind that the more you make at the beginning, the less you will be entitled to raises in the future because there is a ceiling to your pay grade. So if you come in at top pay, other than COLA (cost of living/inflation) raises you will not make more money unless the ceiling is raised by the governmental unit.

Good luck on your job hunting!

You could and you should, but don't expect much. The compensation for civil services are based on a pay scale. You might be able to get a little more than the initial offer, but not much. There is more room for negotiation when you move up to higher grade.

Best wishes.

Of course, the county has probably a scale that they base the pay on such as $12 - $15 dollars per hour or something like that and they probably pay on a scale of experience and education of the position.
