Do you mean slow during download of new definitions or slow while Norton is scanning for virus?
Your speed of your dial up connection does impact the speed of download. If it seems that it takes forever after you hit the "Live Update" then yes a faster dial up, cable connection or DSL might help.
While Norton is scanning your computer, it is not accessing the Internet. You can verify this by disconnecting from the Internet and it wouldn't complain.
My suggestion is to perform virus scan while you are not using the computer.
While being resource intensive, Norton Anti Virus is one of the better software for its purpose. I hope the new version for 2007, which just came out this month, is faster.

The fact that you have a dial-up connection has no effect on why your computer is running slower! With Norton running you have a large program running in the background. With a dial-up connection you aren't going to enjoy the benifits of the Internet, because Norton has to scan everything you download. That includes every web page.
In the beginning Norton learns how you browse the Net, the different programs you use, if one needs to acess the Net...
After you have had it awhile and it learns the programs that you use most, you may notice that it becomes faster.
Norton won't clean your registry or defrag your HD. It won't remove your temporary files or cookies unless you run it regularly and use other programs as well, to clean the registry and HD.
Remember that Windows constantly downloads files from the the net even when you aren't aware. If you have Windows set to upgrade automatically than it will download files if you are away from the computer. The files you don't want, piggy-baking on the files that Windows thinks you need! Cookies, Adware, Malware and Worms using space on your HD that eventually will become clogged, making your computer run slower. Clean your machine regularly when using the Net!

Quite honestly, anti virus software is NOT NECCESARY. If you aren't trying to download porn, or program hacks, cheats, or exploits etc, you will never get virus. TIps: Do not click pop up ads, do not downloading anything unless from a trusted or trustworthy source. Being safe doesn't mean you cant have fun on the internet. I don't use firewalls or anti virus and my computers always ran fine, except for times other people downloaded stuff on my pc. These programs make your computer run slow.

Hi,
Installing any anit-virus software slows down the PC.. I think Norton uses more resources than other anti-virus softwares...
There is nothing related to your system being slow because you are using dial-up...
Anti-virus software install lot of services that run in the background to make sure your PC gets full protection from virus..
The obvious drawback is system getting slowed....
Well.. after all it is well said.. to get something you have to give up something....

dont try to take norton anti virus software because these software are really pirated. Rather than using norton use macafe
its really much more better than norton anti virus.

No Norton just dose that, I advise turning off the thing that is checking every page if you are on dial-up.

Both Norton and McAffee take a heck of a lot of room in your computer, and both cause a serious slowdown. BUT, it's good to have virus protection.

Norton will slow down your PC and its a resource hog
