depends on the state. I live and work in north carolina, and the NC Commissioner of Banks (www.nccob.org) requires an 8-hour class, passing a state exam, and then a background and credit check prior to being licensed as a mortgage originator. But, some states like Pennsylvannia don't have a licensing procedure for the individual producer. Search your state for the bank department or commissioner of banks or department of assessments and taxation. They should point you in the right direction to learn their particular procedures and requirements. Good luck... its hard work, but very rewarding. And, it helps if you have previous lending experience.
