That sounds about right for citizens who could afford it.

However, it is important to note that what they called wine was actually not like what we call wine today. It wasn't nearly as alcoholic, and was more like slightly off fruit juice with very little alcohol content.

They did have beverages with higher alcohol content, but that's not what they are talking about when they talk about the regular wine people drank with meals.

this isn't exactly the answer to your question, but is more of an addition to an earlier post.

some of the ancient Romans got lead poisoning by drinking their water that ran through pipes & the aqueducts because they used lead in some areas. i can't remember if it was the pipes themselves or if it was a sealant of some sort that was lead-based.

as for the wine having lead in it? i have never heard of this.... interesting...

they did drink A LOT, but like they said, it was real watered down and fruited up, very low alcohol contenet, and the reason you had never heard of lead in wine is because the lead was not in the win, but the water that mixed with the wine. and that is what gave them led poisoning, at least my thoughts :D

Bronwen is right...in most cases, they did a 1 to 1 or 2 to 1 mix (water/wine)...

Well, it was weak wine. And they used red lead to color it, so eventually a lot of Romans went mad from lead poisoning.

They also drank before wars to psyche themselves out.
And they had that one god, Dionysus, the wine god. He's my pretend god too.
