What is the bset brand for laptops. And where can I get a cheap one?

In computers, as in all things, to some degree anyway, you get what you pay for.

You can go buy an emachine with a celeron processor and 256 ram for under $500 brand new. And that is just about what you wil get .. a crappy POS that you will struggle with and hate and wish you never bothered with.

If you are limited by money, consider buying a reconditioned or refurbished one from either a manufacturer, or off of ebay. If you buy on ebay, be careful, but you CAN find some good deals. I purchased an older laptop off of ebay some years back and got a great deal, and it lasted for 5 years through 3 different teenagers using it, and travelled all over the country. You should be able to get a decent one for $250-300.

If you can afford $700-800, then go shopping at various stores (please avoid Best Buy), and price the deals they have.

I recently got a Gateway w/ widescreen, AMD Turion 64, 80 GB hard drive, 1 Gb ram, CD/DVD burner and much more for $700.

Most brands in this price range are comparable ... just dont get an emachine, dont get a celeron processor, and make sure you have at least 512mb RAM .. 1GB is much better.

for cheaper laptops ...compaq is the best
in the midrange segment.....DELL is the best
and in the higher segment sony is the best.

for cheaper ones try different shopping sites where you can get a deal suited to you.

Dell is good... But Compaq is "better".... I'm not sure about the price... But I know Compaq is "better", oh and another thing... the more you spend the faster or "better" it is...
