I feel it is good as a temporary way of helping those hwo have hit hard times, but its being abused by the majority, I feel.

I saw a special a few years back and it followed 8 people on Welfare. They were set up with jobs through the show doing the special and I think only two made it and were self sufficient. The others had various complaints. I remember one in particular quitting because she said the work was too hard and she was getting headaches and tired feet. Hello?!!!! Its called a job, I don't enjoy busting my a$$, so that your fat one can sit home watching talk shows. That really burns me up. My brother dated a girl who had three kids and no child support and was on welfare. She was on welfare because she was lazy. She tried for jobs she knew she couldn't get...like cutting hair??!!! She never went to school for it and never cut hair before in her life. Welfare paid for her to go to school and to sit home on the computer chatting etc. while her kids were at daycare (paid for by all of us hard working Americans!) The kids didn't need daycare until she got a job...why she was able to do that I don't know. There are too many loopholes in the system that make it too easy to be a lazy slob on it.

Welfare was a good idea in theory, however, the practice has put a serious strain on other issues that should be addressed. Too many people believe that welfare is a reward for having a baby. They rely on this funding to help them subsidize unnecessary spending. If welfare did not exist, a lot of people would strongly rethink having so many children without having the financial means to support them. They would also have to organize and budget their needs so that they themselves could live. The money saved by ending the welfare system could be put toward education and rebuilding America's social security system and Medicare. This would also create a huge surplus to help with the national debt that keeps growing by the minute. The country could also rebuild its defense programs to create better intelligence.
Ending welfare systems now would be difficult for many Americans for about a decade. Many would cry rascism because the hardest hit would be minorities living in poor areas. But these people would learn to get out and work to support themselves. They would learn responsibility and indendance. That is priceless, a nation of hard workers.

I have mixed feelings about the welfare sys. I started working and paying into the sys when I was 12 yearsold and went to work for Pioneer Seed Corn in the fields during the summer. Yet now that I am physically disabled in a wheel chair fighting a chronic progressive disease I have to fight for everything I get from the state. How ever unwed mothers who have never worked a day in their lives can have 6 kids by 6 different men and live better then I do. I worked and paid into the sys for 25 years and now as I get ready to turn 40 on monday I have to go to food pantries to subsidize my food because my 10 in food stamps doesnt cover milk and bread for the month for my daughter and I. The"new deal" which is what welfare was first called was set up to help families during the depressinon and to help our seniors and disabled to surive. It was never ment to be a long term life style for young healthy people to live by. Back during the depression the benifits were not just given these people did have to work, This how many of our modern and improved public roads bridges and other things were built and maintained. If welfare recieptants were forced to work for their benifits when physically able most if not all would go out and find their own jobs. On the other hand we need to extend the benifits longer for those who are trying to get off by not making it an all or nothing sys.

I think it should be still here, but on a definate temp basis. I think they should help you more on the process of trying to get trained for a job, or to get a job instead of letting people sit there and do nothing.

You should look it up though because many states do not have welfare any more at all. Not even on a temp basis. They may have the food stamps and medicaid, but no more cash.

I think I would rather spend tax money on americans than sending it all to other countries. We send more money per year to other countries than we spent the whole time we had welfare in the US. But everyone complains about welfare. Start complaining about aid to other countries when so many here are out of work and homeless.

What sort of "welfare"?

All federal spending for social welfare combined is less than the corporate welfare given to one major company.

Social welfare was never intended to be a multigenerational family business however, and that is what happened.

During the Depression there were "poor farms" and "poor houses" where people in economic trouble could go and be supported in exchange for minimal work. Well meaning folks decided that it hurt one's pride to be obviously taking charity. It was, and the thing is, that shame caused the majority of people on the dole to better themselves. Once the stigma was gone, many lost all incentive to do anything but live off the dole.

Too bad we can't shame corporations taking unearned money, but there seems nothing will embarrass a businessman, or a politician or a lawyer. Unlike lab rats...

For the majority of people welfare is a survival tool to hold them together until things pick up again. It is wonderful to have a compassionate government who would give back in a time of need., there are many countries that don't. Of course you are going to get people who rort the system..the bludgers etc.but they are the minority of cases and if they are so pathetic as to never aspire to more, then they are to be pitied. Could you live on AU$170 a week and be happy??? If welfare didn't exist it probably wouldn't be safe to leave your home..and your home would have to be fortified.

unfortunately, it has become a way of life for too many families and low life scum bags.
I'll bet at least half of those government parasites don't deserve a dime . just too damn lazy to get off their asses and get a job.
hey, why work when "uncle" will take care of me. I'll just sit on the porch, drink my beer and wait for the mailman...
want welfare? OK then, if you're physically sound, do some community service for your freebies. ( but, noooooo, that would be a slap at my human dignity)

it's good for the lazy, and bad for the unfortunate...seems like the people who really need it can't get it, but the ones who are just lazy don't have any problems

Mostly bad. It's good to help people who've fallen down on their luck and need temporary assistance to get back on their feet. Long term welfare is bad. People need and deserve to be self reliant.

Welfare is intended for those who are in need. Something to help you get by TEMPORARILY while you seek employment but then there are those who abuse the system who dont care to work and eat like kings. Shame on those people.
