They don't. A 9 year does not need a cell phone, but you know what it's not their fault. The peers have cell phones, and their parent don't really care so that how it worked. I know you didn't ask this but don't do what your 9 year old wants, do what you think is right for them. One day, your 9 year old will thank you for taking your time.

There is no reason a child of nine needs a cell phone. They are too young to be alone so calling for help is unlikely. This is another example of how parents today are doing injustices to their children. They are more concerned with being their childs friend than parent. They give them everything so they have nothing to look forward to and in the end, spend their lives unhappy because in the real world ,you don't get what you want when you want it.

so if there at a party or friends house I would know when to get her or if she is playing a sport I would now what to bring her to eat for an away game or she walks home from school and something happens I would know

If my daughter was that age, I would get her one of those firefly ones, so she couldnt jabber with friends, but call me if she were with a friend, an emergency happened, she needed a ride, whatever. But they certainly dont need one to talk to friends.
