There is this huge debate among scientist...is it nature (biological) or nurture (learned)? Infants show signs of shyness. In this case I do believe scientist agree that it is nature. If you have always been shy, even as a child, then this is probably why. If you recently became shy then it's nurture. Something happened that affected you. Ask yourself if you were rejected or made uncomfortable in a public situation that affected you hard. Everyone is different, this is why psychology is a hard field.

Don't know about the psychological reason, but I've observed that some shy people are very protective of themselves, and can become quite aggressive in the protection of their shyness! Interesting twist.

I use to be shy, not now. My was due to a messed up childhood-abusive step dad. Grew up & moved on. Family & friends helped me overcome my shyness.

I'm shy too. I don't know if there is any certain psychological explanation for it, but I think for me, I just hate social rejection, so I just don't really talk to anyone unless they talk to me. I think also because I'm not so confident all the time. Just think about your personality and past.
ok and I'm modifying this now, I did not see what that first person put until after I answered. how funny
