Most of the people here seem to have a very skewed vision of what Communism is. Is Communism "relevant" today? In that sense, no, it is not. I am a Marxist myself, and most of us will agree that we don't believe it is anything we will see in our lifetimes. However, is Socialism, the transitional stage between Capitalism and Communism still relevant? Absolutely. Communism is the complete absence of state/government, profit, and any form of capital whatsoever. Bolivia is led by a Socialist president, that does not mean that Bolivia is Socialist, the same goes for Venezuela and many other countries. However, Socialist movements are taking foot all across the world in much larger numbers than the 90s. The majority of these groups have Communism in mind for a distant future, but that is not possible until all other nations of the world have first gone through Socialism; where there is Communism there can be no Capitalism anywhere in the world, ergo a distant future.
And to the guy who spoke of only 8K a year, you obviously have a very flawed view of Socialist economics. You cannot look at Socialism through the lens of Capitalism, in our society there is so much possibility to feed everybody, to give healthcare to everybody, to provide a decent life for everybody without even increasing our workload, but this is not done because it is not "profitable". In the 1980s, the WHO stated that without any extra increase in production capability, technology or manpower, we had the capacity to feed 12x the world's population. You cannot look at 8K a year (if that is even true) and show that in Capitalism that isn't enough so therefore it isn't enough in Socialism. When the margin of profit is taken away, services can be provided to everybody in society far more easily and without the need for large amounts of wealth.

Communism is highly relevant today, especially in light of the recent N Korea nuclear detonation. Although China is opening its markets, many ideals of communism still exist. These are two forces to be reconed with, economically (China) and millitarilly (both). The next world war will be between China and the United States, with a great possibility of a combat theater in outerspace.

Yes it does .
Community is what communism is about .
We need all types of people in our community to make it work .Sinners so we have preachers law breakers so we have police criminals so we have jailers Pot heads and drunks so we can have re-hab houses .OK so those are all the bad people lets get rid of them .
We can have doctors and farm workers and shelter builders Anything else will lead to problems .We make paint and people will start inhaling it .Glue and they will sniff it Gas and other chemicals bad and misused as inhallants.
So to have a good community we must protect it from all the bad things that people will some how figure out and do .Like alcohol mushrooms coca leaves and pot plants .
Communists hated drugs but allowed smoking and drinking and look at russia today .Just like america .

Communism never had relevance in a thriving society. It requires taking too many steps backwards!
If we divded the worlds weath, EVEYRONE would make about 8K a year.
Can you live on 8K a year!
If we distributed Bill Gates' $40 billion in assets, it would amount to $666.00 per person in the world.
Big deal!
That'll get you a small computer box with a CRT screen, an Xbox and PS3. It won't even get you a downpayment on a Hundia!
It'll barely cover your deposite on an apartment for damanges!
It;s one months rent in a dingy apartment!

It's alive and well. Just look around you. The Comintern is everywhere...
And it's not dead yet.
For more of a scary Halloween experience, just enroll in any average American university.
And always vote to raise taxes and squash private property rights....
