as long as it isn't treated it should be safe, but watch out some older lumbers have been treated with an arsenic compound.

There are company's that will sell you untreated oak. This is a very hard wood very good choice for any animal that needs to chew because of there teeth. So just make sure you get a peice that was never treated with some type of sealer and your guinea pig will be happy to chew on it for hours.
