They want to be accepted by the people around them. By having the latest clothing and accessories, it shows how "cool" they are. It also makes them feel like they fit in with the more "wealthy" and "popular" people, who might seem like they're better or more important than she is.
One way to show them that clothes don't make the man is to continue wearing what you wear now. Let them know that the people who love you won't stop loving you because they don't like your clothing. And anyone worth being with won't shun you because of your clothes.

Well that is the thing, you're a mother and they're teens. A huge majority of a teen's life surrounds, music, boys/girls, music, the mall, and fashion. You have all these teen and young adult celebs with trendy fashion and there's nothing wrong with being trendy. It's just a way of life for some people, especially at that age. And everything isn't meant for everyone. That's why there's trend and timeless. Take the Gap. They have a mixture of trend, but there's a lot of timeless apparel that you can buy there that will take you through a few seasons. But just take a look at some magazines not teenage magazines to get an idea of a look that enhances your beauty and not makes everyone say, ooooh she's too old for that outfit. The thing this season are skinny jeans, stretch pants, chunky sweaters, and thick belts. YOu don't have to be ultra trendy, but just step out of your box just to see how it looks. You'd be surprised what an outfit will do other than deduct from your pocketbook.

It probably helps make your daughters feel good about themselves, whether or not that's the right way to do it. Maybe there is room for improvement on the styles you wear but it doesn't have to mean being uncomfortable and wearing things you don't want to wear. Look for styles that flatter your body type and look age appropriate. There are modern classy styles for any age group.

They not think about comfort, just style, that they are told is the style. Myself, I like personality and creativity in a woman. Not a Clone Style. Clothes manufactures make a killing off style as they know people pay more money.

You should try and take their advice on some things. Don't go overboard and look like you're fifteen..... But there are some jeans out there that aren't low riders. Just be sure they aren't tapered.....yuck.
Regular old t shirts are still basically the same....perhaps more form fitting (which isn't bad at all!!), with perhaps a V neck...
Really nice sweaters out there too.... go on a spree with your girls, and let them pick things out that please them and are suitable for you. Be daring! Good Luck!

Because they're not mature enough to ignore the peer pressure or media influences of the times. With no sense of "self" yet established, they want to be, look, & act like everybody else in their age group. It's a generational thing...-don't let it get YOU down. Afterall- you've already "been there & done that..." :) You can look any way you like!

you know something...i was never that kind of girl! i wore what i wanted to wear much to the chagrin of my mother but i was never a fashionwhore, you know what i mean?i've always worn jeans or dressed in a gypsy type style like my older, yet very,"hip"aunts.i did'nt have to have every strand of hair in place...sometimes i would cut it all off to get people to leave me alone( i let it grow now).i will never understand why girls&some guys have to follow designers and the "stars" WE ARE ALL STARS IN OUR OWN RIGHT, SHINE YOUR OWN LIGHT YOUNG PEOPLE! as far as low-cut jeans i'm 40ish and my boys told me i look best in them "cause i look like a kid ( someone mistook my oldest son for my "boyfriend"which i quickly corrected. listen to your girls in this instance they're right and you'll feel good when you strut in them, afterall remember "hiphuggers"?that's all they are.and you don't have to show skin momma'belt a velvet or a sheer tunic (camisole under the sheer one please) and you'll look great...rock on!

remember what we use to wear when we thought it was the "in" thing......shudder....we all get wrapped up in what the fashion mags concider what is in style. i figured out a long time ago, go classic. it's so much easier on the wallet. just have one or two pieces around that your kid thinks is cool (mine are my pink chuck tennis shoes).

Because young people don't have the experiences in life and wisdom to make sound judgement/decisions, and do stupid things like following the crowd (in many cases to their detriment).
