For the last 6 years, my dads arms, from the elbow down has never been a normal color. This is from the viens in his lower arms leaking blood. We have repeatedly asked doctors what was wrong just to have them do blood tests but have no answer as in why. I have actually heard them tell my father that its because of old age. We have yet to find out what causes this and Im wondering if anyone knew.

I'm not going to touch this with speculation, because every time I've seen it it's not been a good thing.
I would get a second opinion, and if it doesn't clarify matters, I would get a third.
Look for a geriatric doc in the phone book.
Good-luck, my friend.

The microscopic capillaries can lose their elastisity in older age so I imagine the pressure of the blood flowing through them could cause them to break/leak. Being microscopic it wouldn't be enough leakage to cause harm but would appear like a bruise, which is exactly what it would be. It would clot of course, but this could keep happening over and over. I think it makes sense.

Classic Vitamin C deficiency. Take a high potency multiple vitamin with minerals daily, and Vitamin C 500 mg with bioflavinoids 3 times daily. Grapeseed extract and Green tea products also will help strengthen your veins. Good luck!

veins become fragile as u age, and ur father is also on blood thinner, so just minor pressure will get that vein to break thus..blood will go to interstitial tissues that will cause the discoloration.

It could be a sign of liver problems. My mom had many such 'spots' and her liver definitely was in trouble (she was an alcoholic). However she has now stopped drinking and I'm told her liver shows signs of improvement.
