Here's the thing - when you restart the menstruation cycle again after pregnancy it starts without you knowing it. Your first indication is at the end of the cycle when you have your period. So you could be having unprotected sex while you are ovulating and wouldn't know about it.

This phenomenon gets prolonged due to breast feeding - and clouded by the fact that you can not get pregnant as long as you are nursing every 2 hours. This only protects you in the beginning. As your baby starts to nurse every 3 or 4 hours (or just at night), you fall out of that protected range and could start ovulating, leaving yourself vulnerable to the scenario in paragraph 1, above.

Peace!

Women can get pregnant while breast feeding. I think that idea is left over from long ago when people breastfed A LOT more than now-a days. Sometimes they would BF two kids.. Ya gotta think, before juice and soda and preservation methods what else was there to drink besides wine and beer? Water was unsafe so mothers breastfed until the kid was about 6yrs old. Women did not have as good nutrition as they do now and some research shows that women were not fertile every month the way they are in modern times. So under those circumstances, breastfeeding was a form of birth control.
I wouldn't rely on it! Use a back up system if you aren't planning to have another kid soon.

Hi there,

No its not true. The only foolproof method of not getting pregnant is abstinence. If a mother is breastfeeding exclusively there is still that minute possibility that she might ovulate, which means that she can still get pregnant. And if she subsitutes some of the baby's feed with formula, the chances of her getting pregnant will be even higher. Hope this helps.

Not true. It only decrease the chances.
I breastfed my baby every single day for over 12 months...my baby never drank formula or the bottle. I didn't menstruate throughout this entire time...OB said don't worry about contraception. Nonetheless, I got pregnant with second baby. My OB said
"Oops....oh well." She told me we didn't need contraception since I was solely breastfeeding.
Luckily, we wanted another baby at that time....which may or may not be your case.
Think of breastfeeding as an extra bonus in terms of decreasing chance of pregnancy....don't rely on it solely as a means of contraception.

Yes it is true. My doctor says its true but if you dont stick to a reg. schedule of feeding you can become pregnant. Here is info I found

Breastfeeding can suppress ovulation and thus serve as a form of birth control. When you breastfeed, the same hormones that make milk, called prolactin, also suppress the release of hormones that cause eggs to mature and become fertile and the lining of the womb to nourish fertile eggs.

No. You ovulate before a menstrual period, so you could get pregnant because you would have no way of knowing when you would ovulate. Breast feeding does suppress ovulation for a while, but for how long? Use protection. Good for you for breast feeding! Have a happy life!
