Have you made any lasting ones or really connected with people? How much does it differ from knowing the person 'in the flesh' in your opinion?

I've met a handful of good folks, but I've only engaged them after getting a good sense of their personalities. No wack-jobs or scammers, yet. I hope to meet my virtual friends personally some day, as emails and Yahoo! Answers quips seem lacking in really getting a sense of their mannerisms. The avatars are probably accurate only half the time, y'know. :)

I have several online friends who feel just as close as real live in the flesh friends. It seems that we get to know each other well beforehand. I have met several ppl from the Internet , in fact my boyfriend and I met online. We have been together for 2 years now.

Let's see...

One person... her family and mine have vacationed twice together now.

Met several more... sometimes we kept chatting, sometimes we didn't.

Some I already know from the "real world" so the question doesn't apply -- for instance, my customer use chat to reach me.

I have two chat buddies in China, and I'm hoping to meet them someday. I've got several in Canada too.

Some of the online relationship started in 1996, so I guess they're 10 years old now?

I have several on line friends, five years for one friend, about three years for two others, we get along great. I think I know them better than I would if I had met them in person, because we have no reason to impress each other, we will probably never meet in person, just via camera.

i've met a few people online that i later ended up being real friends with and i've never had a bad experience. mostly because you get to talk to the person and get to know them first.

I've only heard horror stories of people meeting, unless it was for a one night stand. Even those, they said the person was not what they thought they'd be.

Be really careful.

I don't believe that love is real in any form. Therefore online relationships are just as fake as any other.
