we don't have too much snow where I live - compared to other Places. Also, snow would seemingly be easier to shovel out from around Doors, but what if Freezing Rain Or Sleet were to get so deep that it covered our Doors, etc. Any comments, please --and knowledge about this type of Problems.

IN 1978 Wisconsin and northern Illinois got so much snow the door was blocked by the snow. I have windows on the south side that could be opened so I went out the window and kicked snow away from the storm door so I could open it. The door to the house opens inward so that nothing can block the door shut. If the windows were frozen I could have bashed the storm door until it came off but thank goodness I didn't have to. The snow was about three feet deep in most places that year. We haven't had anything like that since.

I'm from the Buffalo, New York area. It has the nation's second largest snowfall rate, second only to Syracuse, New York. Firstly, I think you will find that the door to most homes open inward, so it is almost impossible for snow to ever obstruct the entrance. Also, most homes have some kind of 'overhang' over their door that would keep snow from accumulating right in front of the door. Using rock salt can help keep away the ice accumulation from freezing rain or sleet. With all this, realize that a snow of the magnitude you are talking about is rare. I have been told that the blizzard of 1977 covered entire houses, but look at how long that has been. Last weekend we did have a massive early snow that accumulated on trees that still had their leaves (with freezing rain, may I add) that uprooted trees and caused the most extensive damage to the power grid in the history of Buffalo. Glad you asked?

When I lived in Japan, I got snowed in for 4 days one winter. It came way up past the first floor and I had to get out via the bedroom window. I lived up a mountain road and rode down it (and sort of up, too) falling down a lot in the snow on a small scooter. This was about the most fun I've ever had in the cold. Snowplough dug my street out eventually.

The problem occurs when the snow piles up so much in front of your ddor that you can't open it to get outside to shovel it away. If it snowed while you were gone you could shovel your way in but it is hard to push the door open if you are snowed in. I grew up in Minnesota, we had plenty of snow!
