I thought about taking a look to see the dircet relationship between winning the pole and how you finish...but I decided I was too lazy for that :P
I don't think it's a great representation of how you will run in the race. The cars are usually set up differently for qualifying and the race, so if the car does great during qualifying it doesn't neccessarily mean anything.
What DOES matter though, especially at Martinsville, is your pit box. And of course, the pole sitter gets first pick (and the I think they go down the qualifing order from there). At Martinsville the pits are tricky, so everyone wants the first. It can be very bennifical to your position.
All in all I'd say that it helps, because there's less traffic in your way, but it really doesn't matter all that much if your car is good.

I am not much of a Nascar fan, since there are more interesting things than seeing drivers drive around in circles until they crash.
In Formula One, starting on pole is an enormous advantage and it is usually the one who starts on pole who will go on to win the race. Starting on pole can be important for some track because it can make the difference on whether if you will start from the clean side of the track and the dirty one, in most cases, it can mean that you will have the advantage going into the first corner and finally a quick start is a great step towards victory.

Hi Trixie
If you get the pole on a short track, it usually means that you'll be up in front for quite a while. You will notice that whoever gets to lead the race at Martinsville will lead many laps, possibly as many as 30-40 before they pit, or yield to someone else. The closer you are to the front, the less chance you'll have of getting caught up in someone's wreck, and your engine breathes a little better (clean air).
Don't be surprised if Jeff Gordon takes the win. Should be a good race with lots of bumps and wrecks......ENJOY !!!

It makes a difference yes. Starting on the pole means you get to start the race and depending for how long you can stay up front you can lead several laps. Your car also has unspoiled (or clean) air to move in which will make your car faster. And when the Big One occurs it usually happens in the middle of the field of cars which would mean the leader would be safe.

The sponsor of the car and the driver get some extra attention. Other than that, it's pretty meaningless. How many times is the pole sitter one lap down before the halfway point? Pit selection is probably the biggest benefit over everything else.

It all depends what track they are at. Usually at a super speedway, starting up front will give you a chance to lead a lap. Also, if you start in the back, it will sometimes help to avoid the "Big One"! At these tracks it doesn't matter where you start at because of the way they can draft and get to the front in no time. Short tracks are better when you start up front because you can avoid accidents that happen behind you when everyone is trying to get to the front, unless you are trying to lap cars and they try their darnest to stay on the lead lap and then they risk getting into a wreck. It is sometimes a matter of luck to not get into anyone else melee and hope that you have a good day and avoid accidents!

Yes it does the better you qualify the better pit box you can have each track is different and racers like to have the best pit possible and at martinsville it is very critical you don't want to be in the lead and have to pit on the back stretch that means you would have to come all the way back around the pit before you can re-enter the track

yes it makes a big difference it means if you start up front you don't have all that traffic to go through to get to the front it keeps you out of someone elses trouble and you also have clean air
