The typical pencil available in today's market is called a lead pencil. However this grey marking material is not lead but graphite mixed with clay.
But you would not be totally wrong to say that the pencil lead is a metal. For this was the case during the Roman period. At that time, the pencil was a thin metal stick made of lead used for scratching on papyrus.

Pencil 'lead' is not a metal. It's called so because it looks and feels like lead. Romans did use little lead sticks (called stylus) for writing, but that's history. It's actually a mixture of two forms of carbon : graphite and charcoal. Charcoal is often replaced by hard clay. In soft lead pencils ('B' or 'BB') used for shading and dark marking, graphite (the softer component) predominates. In hard lead pencils ('H' or 'HH') used for line drawings and finer marking, charcoal/clay (the harder component) predominates.
Pencils used for normal writing ('HB') have the two components
in comparable proportions.

Pencil s lead is made of graphite. It is a form of a carbon and hence it is not a metal.
(Definition of metal : substance with high electrical conductivity, luster, and malleability, which readily loses electrons to form positive ions (cations). Metals are otherwise defined according to their position on the Periodic Table, including groupings as alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, transition metals, and rare earth metals.)
(Graphite (named by Abraham Gottlob Werner in 1789 from the Greek γραφειν: "to draw/write", for its use in pencils) is one of the allotropes of carbon. Unlike diamond, graphite is an electrical conductor, and can be used, for instance, as the material in the electrodes of an electrical arc lamp. Graphite holds the distinction of being the most stable form of solid carbon ever discovered. It may be considered to be the highest grade of coal, just above anthracite, although it is not normally used as fuel because it is hard to ignite.)

Lead pencils only contain metal in that little band that goes around the eraser. Not enough to set of the detector. But just put them into your carry on bag instead of having them in your pocket.
