1. Diesel fuel users are a "captive market". Most trucks use diesel, and since those are necessary for most business activity, the fuel producers get away with screwing us.
2. Diesel fuel and heating oil are very similar and often compete for refinery space. The refineries have already started to cut back on the production of diesel in favor of producing more heating oil. Less supply to meet consistent demand equals higher prices.

No 2 diesel is the same thing as No 2 home heating oil. The only difference is that (here in the USA) they add a dye to the home heating oil so that they can detect it in the fuel tank of a truck. Home heating oil does not have the highway taxes on it that road fuel does.
Right now, the demand for gasoline has dropped, due to the end of the summer driving season. The demand for diesel / heating oil is high, because people are filling their home tanks in preparation for the cold winter months.
The law of supply and demand is working. Demand is high and the price goes up. Demand lowers and the price goes down
There have also been changes required in the deisel fuel to make it cleaner, which of course adds to the cost!!

All the answers you get will not reveal the real reason. A diesel engine can be modified easy to run on many fuels, and they are keeping control of this as long as they can, especially when the laws of government are behind them. light weight cars and trucks are no longer sold in this country, you need to go to canada, or Mexico. A diesel pup will go 50 miles on a gallon of diesel, and maybe even further on corn oil.
