there comes a time in every players career, regardless of sport, where he/she must contemplate the future of their careers and look for what is in their best interest. As much as Stevie Y loves the game of hockey, he knew that his body could not take anymore, the best time to retire is when you know youre done.I commend Stevie for his retirement, i wish there were more players like him in the nhl. As for shanahan leaving, well, he still has a few seasons left, and i wish he would have stayed in detroit, however, he will do well in new ork. I think its so easy to forgert that detroitis a deep and well developed team, With Young guys like datsyuk and Zetterberg to fill those empty roster spots, this is their chance to shine. Detroit will not take the presidents trophy this year, to answer your question.they made 2 mistakes in the off season, Not resigning Manny and signing Hasek instead, it will blow up intheir face, when st lois eliminates them in the first round of the playoffs, consder it a small bit of revenge,as it were.

it is a different team without these two great players. those two players being gone will affect the team in many areas. their record will be a little or alot different depending on how well this team clicks. right now they are not playing too well. it is early in the season for anyone to judge this team. i kinda think the wings had made a mistake with getting hasek. i don't think ozzie is all that good either. the team lacks a regular scorer. shanny provided a helping hand and there really ain't anyone close to his style of play here in detroit. datsyuk and zetterberg need to get more aggressive with their scoring chances and score big goals. lidstrom's style of leadership is no where near yzerman's. i think he is a good leader but he needs to come up with ways to motivate this once proud team to win especially against teams like san jose and edmonton. i think the wings are a 4th place team. they will be between 4th and 8th in the west come playoff time. i can't really see this team being any lower than 2nd in the central division. so yes this is a bad thing.

Not necessarily. Life has to go on. Yzerman is still in the Wings' organization. Absence of Shannahan will give other players an opportunity to step up.

It certainly will. That's a lot of goals to replace. However, Lidstrom will be a great Captain. As far as the others stepping up, it'll just take some time. They still have great talent in Datsyuk, Draper & Zetterberg. Lang does ok, too. "LET'S GO RED WINGS!"

Yzerman retired this year he has been getting injured allot over the past 5 years and he was a true leader that did everything for the Wings i will miss him even though im not a Wings fan. and as for Shanny he was injured last year in the playoffs and he was there best player all year they just couldn't score that's all, it happens.

Yzerman retired because his bod couldn't take it anymore. He is getting beat up from playing all these years. This was a long time coming. And Shanahan got a better deal. I am not sure how they (Wings) are going to be this year but go Wild!

Yzerman didn't have much choice but to retire. It was just his time. Would have happened sooner than later.
As for Shanny, well I can't remember the circumstances on him leaving. Was it Detroit just not wanting to sign him or did he want a change?
Either way, Shanny is shinning in the big apple.

I wouldn't say it is bad, it should allow other scorers and leaders to arise and start fresh...Detroit may actually be rebuilding this season but then again they may be right there when the playoffs begin...we'll have to wait and see...but looking at teams like Anaheim, San Jose, Dallas, Edmonton, Minnesota and Nashville...it's gonna be very tough.

Losing Stevie Y. was bad. Shanahan needed a change of scenery, as his fast start with the Rangers indicates.
