An old friend of mine moved into a hotel, which had been converted into apartments, and he told me that they have fire drills there. I almost wanted to move in there (This was back in the 90s) and I did not like the idea having a fire drill at a hotel, and/or an apartment building. Is fire drills a good idea in a large apartment building or not?

Well, they may not have drills per se, but the fire alarm system needs to be checked and tested at least annually in most areas. Maybe your friend was referring to those tests?

In any event, is it that much of a pain to practice what to do in the event of a fire in any situation? Seems like a good idea to me.

I've never heard of it but it may be a local law. My apt building is only 3 floors and the Fire Department has an inspection once a year to insure all the fire safety equipment is in inspection code condition. (Sprinklers, Extinguishers, etc.)

in my case that remind me of a school fire drill Hummmmmm I think in some big cities like chicago, san Francisco Los Angeles Seattle with apartment. it is a hotel/apartment if so, that is for low income people I think by law with that type of apartment depending on how old it is the older it is I the more likely to take risky of fire hazzard if you are confortable with that type of apartment for example earthquake proof. I think children cannnot live in that kind of an apartment becuaseit is not suitable for children ti live in it would be made for single low income residents or even married couples. as far as what kind of neightborhood it is in. it mostly like to to be a good ideal to have a fire drill just to be aware of a fire hazzard to ge the ideal how to escape from the fire if you are in old aparment complex Now I am not sure about securities though such as bricks and wood type that are easy to burn espeically crime rate if that type of apartment have bars on every windows yes that is the bottom line because those window bars are not safe evenit is just for crime prevention peeking throught he window I used to live in the house like that and I di dnot like it it seme to be too dark with the window bars enclose on the window. just keep in mind taht the older apartment it is the more risky the fire hazzard to have and they will requre dire drills.

It's a good idea but I wouldn't want to do them either.
