if you have yahoo or hotmail email then you won't be able to do that unless you're running their respective messengers (yim/msn)

if you have outlook, you can go to "start" and then "control panel" and the "sounds and audio devices" - go to "sounds" tab, and under 'program events' scroll down until you find "new mail notification"...click on it and select a sound from the drop down menu...or if you have your own sound byte then click on "browse" and add it to the sounds list...then you're pretty much done..

I assume you are talking about e-mail. you can record your own voice and save it to drive c:\ let's say you recorded in coming mail, now go to control panel go to sound icon double click go to sound go down. to mail notification change that by clicking on browse then go to drive c:\where you saved your file highlight it click OK. every time you get e-mail you will hear your voice saying in coming mail.

did you make sure your speakers are on? and if they are, make sure you're not muting any sounds.
if those two are good, it depends on what e-mail service you use. some have sounds, some don't
but if you were really talking about real mail, um, i guess just listen carefully for the mail being delivered.
