Yes i have an answer, get him off the meds!! Adhd is soooooo overated and nowadays "every young hyper boy has adhd" its just an easy way out. They kept telling me over and over to medicate my son But i Didnt!! As they get older they get better. Plus you've already labled your son so he probally has a low selfesteem. I noticed you didnt fail to mention"my son has adhd" i could only imagine it seems like everything he does gets blamed on "adhd" . Sounds to me more like another problem. Maybe all the noice. Maybe you should get off the computer and help him, maybe you should take away all other distractions. And remember when you label your kids they feel lesser of a person. Get some parenting skills , read up on Adhd and dont medicate your kids THATS WHAT MAKES HIM SLOW!!

You probably already know this, but...
Impoverish the environment in which your son does his homework, and also the environment in which you or others provide help. Do not permit computer homework assignments. If you can, do not even permit a calculator for math problems. No TV, video games, or computer play until the homework is done.

Get at least one more opinion on the ADHD. ADHD is a much overused diagnosis, and, as the answerers above have stated, the meds often do the child more harm than good. You and the child both need to find ways to increase his attention span, not wear him out and make him sleepy or groggy.

You might want to try talking to someone who works with Pathways Education and Training Centers in St. George, Utah. They work with specific brain exercises and meditation techniques which aim at helping children integrate both sides of their brains. I notice many answerers also say take your son off medication and work on diet. Those are also two goals of Pathways - although of course the decision is left up to the parents, but they also incorporate those unique brain exercises and parent training which make it possible for children who struggled before to succeed. Check out the website below, or you can call 435-674-1331 and talk to Janice Culley or Barbara Christian. Or you can email them using the link on the website. Good luck.

The medication he's on might not be the right one for him, or the dosage may be too high/low. Check with his physician to see if there are alternatives that will help him. Break his homework up into smaller sections. You might even try placing time limits (15 minute increments work well) for those sections to give him a goal to try to reach.

Both of my sons have ADHD and have been on medicine for two years now. We have to do homework away from distractions like the TV or other people talking. Also I sit down with them. If I leave them to do it by themselves they get distracted very easily.
Even trying to clean their rooms is hard without supervision. My oldest son (age 12) likes to do his in the morning before school sometimes, when he's not so tired from his daily routine.

GET HIM OFF THE DRUGS unless you want to set him up for future street drug use. They destryoy his appetite, ability to control emotions, sleep cycle through the night and most importantly, his ability to grow to a normal height and weight. Then make sure he has a break after school where exercise is involved (a walk/bike ride/play at the park) then after dinner, sit down with him and help him go through his homework, don't expect him to sit down and do it himself. Sometimes I gave my son an exercise ball to sit on, other times he stood while completing his homework. We also hired a tutor for one day a week to give huby and I a break. Trust me, I know how difficult this is but just know that this too shall pass. Also, real important, focus on the positive and comment over and over when he is trying.

Get him off the meds, they are lying he does not need them. Why does everybody put there kids on meds just because they are hyper or can't focus very long, those are kid like things. Protect you sons health and take him off the meds. What you need to try is have your son get involved in a sport or some thing thats fun and challenging to him, and watch him get better. It's proven, trust me

Lot's of good advice on getting the kid off of meds.

Kids have sat and done their homework for ages...100's and 100's of years. Your son has no excuse.

If your house is "media oriented", that may be harming his ability to focus.

I suggest no tv, no radio, no noises (if you can).

We rarely turn our tv on until 10, and that is just to watch the news. The kids do their homework in quiet.
