nellie kind of has it almost right, HD was more for professionals and contractor types, no frills yet cheap and had everthing mostly . Lowes has tried to attract females with its frills and more attractive aisles and things like "curtains and blinds" and such, more for the lady buyer, yet still trying to keep some contractor appeal....which it has slowly gone downhill for me...being a contractor, I disagree with others here on one issue, LOWES by far has lost more employees in my entire state than HD and by far Lowes employees were the least knowledgable and helpful...yet lowes had many more in each store than HD did...however HD seems to always have ailses blocked off I need to get into! and oh yes Ive dealt with BOTH trying to get my ROOF redone! OMG dont go to either! LOWES wont even take my phone number down, I had to get a manager on 4 tries and even then argued to simply get my name on a list to have them call me... which I ended up having to PAY $35 upfront for an estimate, which again after 2 weeks of trying to actually PAY them for the roof work, still couldnt get a manager to set up a time for me to come down! I had $8,000 and they wouldnt take it... lol.....I gave up with them and also with HD , although at HD they did send a guy(salesman) from out of state, and did a free esitmate yet he put me off also and lied so many times I cancelled the job with them also! BTW got a local contractor did the work for $2800 less than lowes price and $4000 less than HD's price!

I once heard that Home Depot is for guys and Lowes is for the ladies. Who knows. I shop at the Hell Depot sometimes only because it is in walking distance to my home. Quite frankly though, the customer service blows a s s. Long lines, and can't find anyone to help me most of the time. Lowes seems just as painful to shop there too, but a bit more expensive.

I prefer Lowes over Home Depot. The one near my house is way better organized, i never seem to have problems finding a staff member, and if I DO have a problem finding something, the employees are always really helpful and know where to find just about everything.

I like mom and pop stores but almost all the one around my house are closed becouse Lowes and Home Depot. I would have to go with Home Depot they help you more and the have people that sometimes know what they are talking about. I go to lowes to get what I need and get out.

I'm a girl and I've been renovating my house (mostly myself) for nearly 18 months. I am on a first name basis of most employees at both these stores and have spent thousands and thousands of dollars.
As with most things, it will vary by location and circumstances.
I have found this
1. Internally, employees seem to dislike working for HD, and there are jokes about how they often leave and go to Lowes
2. Lowes seems to have more people that actually know something. They also have more people that think they know something, so be careful. But I actually had to train two staff members at HD on how to use THEIR deck building software.
3. Both of them will price match, so you can really pick your favorite store (they both FEEL different) and then get the prices adjusted (if its worth it). Or if the one farthest from you is cheaper, just get the price (off the net, or in the store) and then notify the other store.

As a professional contract installer I`ve dealt with both. They all have management problems to varying degrees. On the retail side, I`ve found something quite interesting. If a product doesn`t sell well they remove it from the shelves. This does`nt always mean it`s a poor product. Lots of times it`s a product that does`nt need replaced frequently. Example. In our Lowes store you can no longer find a "metal" speed square. They rarely need to be replaced, unless lost. All you can buy are those cheap plastic ones. Could this be a mirror of our society????

I am a handyman, shop in both stores several times weekly. I find that HD prices are slightly lower on most items, substantially lower on a few. Help harder to find at HD. HD has self checkouts, so I can get in and out without waiting in lines as at Lowes.

Because it is closer to me, other than that I don't like Home Depot, because its dirty and they always have like 100 illegal Mexicans standing out side waiting for day work. Its not welcoming.

They're pretty much the same thing. Whatever's closer to you is probably fine. Don't expect much professional advice from employees of either.
