They do a good job stirring the substrate, and do not eat live plants. They are also not hermaphrodites - they have separate sexes (male and female), but females can reproduce via parthenogenesis (self-cloning), which is why they can reproduce so fast. They will however only reproduce as fast as their diet would let them - unless you're leaving a bunch of food in the tank for them to munch on, they're not going to be a problem.

They are the best and most beneficial freshwater snail I have ever come across, they do wonders for a planted tank.
