1st make a ditch that goes at least 1/4" for every 5' that is dug. Use a landscape cloth, or something comparible. Then add 3/4" rocks or bigger thru out ditch. Cover w/ same material. Now replace w/ fill that you used to dig ditch. "French Drain"

Sounds like you are looking to drain a low spot of standing water, or roof runoff to an external space.

This can be easy of complicated depending on the problem. Generally, get the drain pipes, PVC or vinly with holes to let the water leach into them and dig them into the ground going downhill to the storage: a cistern or pond or something.

A gravel filled cistern can also distribute a set of other drain pipes to let the water distribute into a drain field, like the septic system does. Don;t interconnect the two.
