After having my son, I didn't have a period for a year and a month(because of breastfeeding). I started getting it again about 4 months ago, 3 months after I stopped nursing him, and it came when it was supposed to (during my sugar pill time). It would only last about 4 days max. Suddenly last week, I got my period when I wasn't anywhere near my sugar pills, two weeks after another period, and 4 weeks too early (I cycle so I only get my period every 6 weeks). Today is the 6th day I've been bleeding. I am beginning to be concerned. I have lost a lot of weight and I am worried now that being underweight could be what's causing this extremely long period. When should I call my doctor?

Please see you doctor, he/she will do some blood tests and other tests to make sure you are not anaemic, and to find out why you have lost weight, (which is a real concern). Usually if a woman loses to much weight, they stop menstruating.

So its time to have it checked out!

Good luck

don't let these people scare you. your weight may be a issue for this. something similar happened to me 5 months ago.i usually have 4 day period ( have since i had my daughter 6 years ago) all of a sudden it was 9 days then two weeks later 9 days. i freaked out because of what my friends said. made an appointment went to the doctor. and guess what it was normal. she said that was my body's way of starting a new cycle. so instead of having my period on the 23 day its on the 8th.........what i would do first is to talk to the doctor over the phone. don't waste your copay on something that may not be serious.

I lost a drastic amount of weight and while I was in this "very thin stage" I experienced EXACTLY what you describe. It is called "breakthrough bleeding" and caused by low hormone levels due to low body weight (body fat produces estrogen). Most likely you will need a stronger birth control pill to supply you with more estrogen/progesterone or you could of course try to gain a few pounds and see if that regulates your cycle.

Hope this helps!

It seems that your cycle is all messed up. You might want to check with your doctor about it mainly for the irregularity than for the 6 days of bleeding. My ex-wife had long periods, usually 8 days of heavy discharge.

should of already called him. with this type of bleeding and the weight loss it could be serious. any time you lose a lot of weight, that is if your not trying , is a sign of something is not right. call your doctor right away.

definitely see a doctor but...
i'm pretty sure that being underweight actually makes your periods shorter/come later. like, girls with eating disorders lose their periods...
not to say you have an eating disorder, but you know what i mean, right?
