and early 70's? I have some theories as to why this seems to be the case, but I was curious what you all thought about it, or if you even agree with this premise. BTW I am not an old fuddy-duddy. FYI, I was born AFTER this apparent peak, I just happen to listen to alot of music.

Eric, come on get real. I graduated in 1994, so trust me I know my 90's music. There were SOME good vocalists like Eddy Vetter, and some decent song writing out of Kurt Cobain, but all the rest of the rock groups were copy-cat Seattle garage grunge bands. The reality of the 90's is that the real talent during that decade was in the rap industry, and that ain't saying a whole lot. Besides Wu Tang, Dr Dre, Snoop, B.I.G., 2Pac and some underground rappers the 90's was not that great, just a little better than the 1980s.

Natlie, I find your theory of a link between drug abuse and creativity very disturbing. I knew alot of drug addicts in my day and they didn't have a lick of creativity or talent.

I doubt it honey, music will never be what it was, the great musicians are either retired or dead. Like now there is no country-western it is now mixed with pop or whatever, it is like it is all melting into one pot. You used to be able to tell the difference.

I agree with you, but let me say this: Back then, record companies were willing to take more chances with newer bands.
Especially, in the late 60's, companies were willing to release
10 " unknowns " hoping that 1 act would make it big and would
recoup more than enough to absorb the costs for the other 9.
They still do that to a certain extent but not to the level back then.
It's too expensive and too difficult to break new artists now. With
the advent of the net, the rules are changing. As in more and more bands literally giving their music away for free just to be
heard - building an audience and maybe being noticed by a
major ( or even ) minor label. So, maybe that level of creativity
still exists but it's harder for them to attract a national audience.
And it's even harder to get prime airplay because of radio
stations and their very restricted playlists. Well, that's my theory
and I hope it's makes sense to you. I'd like to hear yours and others.

there's a reason those artists aren't around to release a comeback album. DRUGS. mind expanding drugs were responsible for much of the deep insightful lyrics. that's why they died in their 20s and 30s. now, most of the 'inspiration' they had is illegal. also, it was a much more politically active time. some country western songs are voicing the same kind of passion about the war going on right now, but it's more supportive than in the 70s.

the artists experimenting with drugs right now are more into the electronica culture. being from that scene, i find much of music as inspiring as hendrix's guitar playing.

also, the "thug/gangsta" culture has ruined the music scene. now the more times you work '*****", "fu*k", "hoes" and "dolla" into your "song", the more albums are going to sell.

end rant

Musicians are getting lazier. It's really sad. The only mainstream band that has a lot of musical talent is the Chili Peppers.

i think this should be the question - Will the music industry ever reach the level of creativity and talent that was demonstrated during the 90's

....It just makes me sad that Im lumped in with a generation that has no taste in music

I'd just like to hear some of them playing instruments instead of synthesizers and mixing.
