Long ago. In fact, sex used to be only be done for the purpose of procreation, so I would imagine it was back when people still lived in caves.
Around that time, men could smell when a woman was ready to become pregnant, similar to animals now, and would "make a move" only when it was her time.

They way I understand the story, mankind, like all animals, new how to procreate from the beginning. The "discovery" was that sex could be recreational, and the trick became preventing the babies.
