Movies these days are scary, but not the same kind as the classics. Today, movies are a bunch of pretty people and fancy computer animation.

I agree 110%. I thought the first Nightmare on Elm Street was the scariest of all. It seems that B-rate movies shot with less expensive equipment are darker than the ones shot with expensive cameras and CGI. In horror movies, the more the special effects, the less the appeal.

The funniest horror movie I saw was Carpenter's "The Thing". The gore and violence was so over-the-top and never-ending that it stopped being scary. You just had to laugh. It was a classic though, and I'll always remember it fondly.

I totally agree because these "supposedly" scary movies that come out today are trying soo hard but are soo not ready for how the old scary movies used to be. Scary movies will never be the same!

The ORIGINAL scary movies like "Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" and the Murnau "Nosferatu" scared by shadowy nightmare effect, the heart of the subconscious stick-with-you quality of German Expressionism, the externalization of fears...now THAT's a classic! What did they call Caligari--the Grandfather of all horror movies?

They were scary because of their story. They knew how to make a film spooky without shock treatment. Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolfman, Invisible Man, and the Mummy - still do a great job of setting the mood.

What do you consider "original"?
You need to clarify your question a mite.
