Some people seem to think love is an inert thing, something we are born with. But I disagree. I think love is a concept that is behaviorally expressed and must be learned. If someone has not been taught love, then they cannot demonstrate it. If someone has learned love, then rejection, disappointment and changes in circumstance can make one think of love and less useful or unadaptive, so they will be less likely to love in the future.

Nothing lowers your capacity. It remains intact as long as you draw breath, and arguably beyond that point. However the will to love may be significantly affected by the hardening influences of life experience. But even this is only a matter of choice. If you choose to neglect "the better angel of your nature", then you shall. It may be helpful to understand that love is not - as defined by popular culture - a feeling. Love is what you choose to do. It is selfless, and therefore unaffected by the adverse circumstances surrounding one's self. Love is independant of your individual being, and need not be subject to it's whims. Choose to love and you will, choose to dwell on your hurts, rejections, and disapointments, and you will do that as well. But your capacity to love remains unaffected.

It is clearly your expectation from that Love.Generally love love develops by stages, like filling of the balloon. You keep on expecting something out of that love and the moment you perceive that you are reaching that point you stop loving more. But , as you go along lowering your expectations you will have that exhilarating feeling of loving and being loved.
Some people, in their over enthusiasm fill it so quickly and find they are chocked.

'What lowers your capacity to love?'
The rejections you have receive through your life, how people have treated you and how you have been brought up.

Loss of hope reduces us. When you reach a point where hope is gone, you lose the desire and capacity to be open to love.
