The obvious answer is to sterilize instruments. However, I have also heard that telling the Dad-to-be to boil gallons of water gave him something to do and got him out of the way.

It's a good way to set up urgency and drama for the viewers at home. Everybody knows if somebody demands water to be boiled something serious is about to happen.

Just something for the "menfolk" to do to keep them occupied.
Just a post note for all of the people that posted sterilization in here...They had no idea what sterilization was even though it was in fact used back in ancient Rome. Back in the 1700's and early 1800's, most people feared a bath because they thought that water made you sick. (I believe this came from people taking a bath in the winter and then coming down with pneumonia.)

Sterilization. you do no longer did the toddler in, yet water it extremely is been heated as much as 5000 tiers will take the conceal off a hog. it's going to honestly kill some germs. My reaction grew to become into, "provide me an epidural NOW!!"

You know what's funny? I ask that same question all the time!!
I think they use the water to clean the baby!
I really don't know, I find it strange, I saw it on a western show called "Bonanza."

It's true, it was a diversion for to keep the extry people occupied. You know, when there's a crisis, make some coffee. It's a great escape.

I've wondered the same thing. Sterilization, sure, but what are they going to sterilize? Their hands ? The towels ? It doesn't make any sense.

Yeah, it's to sterilize everything. You know how you burn a needle to take away the germs, or wash your hands with warm water? Well, hot stuff kills germs.
