Assuming that you are a US citizan, what kind of information would be a detriment?

Secret is not that high so it may not be that bad.

In general everywhere you lived and worked for the last 10 years. And how much you made, any times of unemployment will need to be explained.

A list of any person or company you are late in payment, a list of any law suits, bankruptcy and late pays.

A criminal history, including drivers records.

list of any close relations in jail or prison

for higher security they will actually send investigators to talk to people you used to live next to, to talk to past college and high school teachers and frineds of yours.

When I did my background ( I was about 30 at the time) they had a list of pickup lines I used on girls in the bars when I was in college. And I had to explain them in writing

I worked for the secret service as a spotter for people in and out of gov. and worked as a dept. of interior as a water chemist by being hired for U.S.G.S. in menlo park, ca.as a gs 2 and worked for 5 years. In 1970 I got my U.S.A. GOV. Patent in 6 Mo.I invented various patents like a laser to read a record and be COMPUTERSOUND my domain,and worked for my parents GOURMET SHOP. IN 5 years I got to GS 7 before I left GSGS

the same as anything else ... criminal records/convictions ...security clearances are given on a need to know basis you dont just apply for them .. so you would never have gotten to the place where you would need and they would give you one if you had a bad background ...and security clearances can be revoked if you get into trouble ...
