those things on the top of the necks and does anyone know where i could find replacements?

I see that some members have answered your question about tuning a guitar.
The things you are referring to are called Tuning Keys, Machine Heads or Pegheads.
They are located at the headstock of the guitar { which holds the strings in place.} They are also om other stringed instruments such as a Banjo & a Violin which is a bowed string instrument.
There are several types of guitars--Classical which have Nylon Strings.>>>>The Acoustic which have Steel Strings.
A Plectrum(PICK) is used to play a guitar but some people prefer to play via their Fingers.
