well i want to make a video for a product is it legal to use an artists song and what are the general rules about this and what about tm items and what not and how small can you write warnings and stuff say like prices may be differnt please only answer if you are sure i dont whant to end up with a lawyer and in court thank you

It would depend if they still owned the royalty rights. If they do, you must contact the person who does and work out what payment they will expect. Do not forget the contract!

If you use someones song, you have to pay BMI or ASCAP or SESAC. They do the collections for the rights to use songs. Each time the video is shown, a payment will need to be made.

Even bars and restraunts that play radios for people in them, have to pay monthly fees for the use of artists songs.

There is one case right now where a person used some covers ( that is others recorded music) and did not have a permit to do so and did not pay the fee. They are being sued for 20 K per use right now and is most likely going to have to lose his business

Royalties must be paid to any artist and a written release for their music. That is why Movies are so expensive, especially if they have modern music or even the Oldies. The artist wants to be paid.
