By law, no one under 18 is allowed to enter a screening room where there is a movie with an R rating showing unless accompanied by an adult. If this occurs, and they are found out, the theatre can be fined upwards of $50,000 and be shut down.
If a person under 18 is found in an R rated movie by an usher, or another theatre employee, they are summarily removed from said theatre and often not allowed to return.
So, to answer your question: They MUST accompany you.

The motion picture association I think is the ones who rate the movie. It's up to parents not to let their children watch them at home. And it's up to theaters to enforce it. Minors (people under 18) don't know what's best for them or else they would be able to vote. There are plenty of pg-13 movies for minors to see. But for minors to watch movies like Saw, Sin City, and the Departed is just wrong.

Dude, if your local theatre actually pays attention to that Crap (which most don't) just lurk outside the theatre and find an adult who is going to saw 3. offer to buy them popcorn and a drink (a 15 dollar value) if they will pose as your chaparone. They buy your 2 tickets and you're in line with them, go buy them their crap, and head into the theatre.
I've done it for teenagers before.

laws where i live are you have to have an adult BUY the ticket. I was always driven to the theatre by my neighbor's dad and he bought our tickets and then just said have fun and walked out and we were never questioned.
Call the theatre first to make sure is all i can say though

The movie is rated R for a reason, it's not appropriate for children under 18 because it contains violence, sexuality, bad language or any combination thereof. Stick with movies rated G or PG13 depending on the child's age.

They should need parents to even enter the theater with tickets to a R movie. You really should watch it with them.
