OMG in college ALL the time. We used Pantene and found it worked better than any carpet cleaner and it left the rug so nice and soft. I always tell people to try that!

You don't say if you are spot treating or using a machine. It will work, however it is only a temporary fix since removing the shampoo residue is close to impossible the carpet will get dirty again faster. (Think about shampooing your hair and not getting it all rinsed out) If spot treating shaving cream works better. If you are using a machine with the rotating brushes without an extractor, or just trying to clean it with a sponge mop it won't make much difference forthe short term once the foam goes down but if you are using an extraction machine (one that sucks the dirty water out of the carpet) put about a tablespoon of fabric softner in the dirty water tank this works as a defoamer. Then try to go over the clean area with a mild vinegar/water solution it works best to get the extra residue out. note: these tips also work well with carpet shampoo.

I've used it for spots. Works great. Using it as substitute for rug shampoo ma be more expensive than buying carpet shampoo and if you out it in a shampooer it might make to may suds and that will leave your carpet dull.
