How do you know he's constipated?

It's normal for breastfed infants to go up to seven days (yup, you read that right) without pooping. Even formula-fed infants don't necessarily poop every day.

And grunting and straining and going red in the face aren't signs of constipation in an infant, either. It's hard for them to coordinate all their muscles and go.

Really, you should only be worrying about constipation if he's pooping little pellets. Other symptoms are usually caused by gas, not constipation. (You can try Mylicon, or try burping him extra well, or "bicycle" his legs.)

So you should consult your pediatrician before doing anything.

Most pediatricians will tell you, if you're really worried, that a little rectal stimulation usually does the trick. They'll tell you to take a rectal temperature, and it should help him go in no time.

DO NOT GIVE YOUR BABY KARO SYRUP OR ANY OTHER HOME REMEDIES! They can be dangerous, especially in a child so young.

I used karo in my daughters formula, but the baby is way to young for anything like that. You need to take her into the doctors and have them check her/him out. That is really young to be trying to figure it out on you're own. See a doctor. They will normally let you in right away since it is an infant and you will feel so much better after doing so.

my baby too was constipated at a young age- and i had no idea what to do..so i got on the internet and looked up some "remedies" that wouldn't harm a newborn i opted for the vaseline on the rectum..they say to insert your lubed finger just a little but i didn't have to i just rubbed vaseline on his bottom and within minutes he was going...with no screaming like before..good luck i know how heartbreaking it is to see your little one in so much pain..i hope it works for you, if you decide to try it.

Both my sons had this problem right away too. Try giving him a little bit of water between feedings that will do the trick and it is safe. It may take a couple times.
