Almost any pre-existing myths will do. Read that chapter in Joseph Campbell's book.

Myths are reflections of the catharsis of our own human growing. If you were to scour the myths of creation, redemption, salvation of humanity - you would find a shared perspective that we begin without the wisdom/enlightenment to attain some greater good - and there is a path one must endure to reach it.
The path from "darkness" to "light" can include any number of magical beings - but all limited in some way as to lend a progression to the story. The story is of their interaction, decisions, etc to cause a change.
Most myths involved several layers of failure, with many subcharacters, to the story. This gives them the multitude of "cliffhanger" subplots necessary to keep a listener engaged. All myths around today were born of vocal storytelling, and all have telltale signs of embellishment as copies split off and were recorded.
To create a "good myth," involve several characters most like humans, with characteristics a reader/listener can identify with. Follow the patterns of universal experiences (family, hardship, loss, moral dilemma).
If I were to create a myth today, I would build a story around a wild and uncaring world of animals and nature. These animals would fight and ultimiately beg for mercy from some higher power, who would be absent for many ages. Then, upon returning, this creator (most likely a being borne again of their tears) would build a new animal to rule them all. Finally, just when the listener thought such a new animal was mankind, I would detail how this pattern has taken place many many times, with a new, more intelligent animal being introduced each time, and we are only the latest. A new creature has yet to arrive, but enough people suffer for long enough, we may be surprised that we are no longer the "masters" of this domain.

The Universe was as a seed in the beginning planted by the gods. It would grow, mature, age and die. All the while the omniscient gods would know the product as the farmer knows his crop.
