My family and I live in Texas. We can't afford a house. I wish I could find the cheap ones your talking about. It's really depressing. What state are you from? Just wondering

Like everyone has been saying the cost of living here is less expensive because wages are on average lower here then in the other major metropolitan areas. However, that is starting to change. We have a new Toyota plant opening soon and for some reason a lot of people moving here from California. Prices are starting to go up. Most likely you will be shocked by property taxes but you must keep in mind that once you become a resident we do not pay state income tax. For example a $150,000 house has property tax of $3200 depending on which area you live in. I have lived many places around the U.S. and oversea and I keep coming back to the San Antonio area. After living in the D.C. area from 2002-2004 I could not wait to come back here. I pay less for a 2000 sq ft house, 2 car garage, and an in-ground pool then I did for a 1000 sq ft apartment with one reserved parking spot in Arlington, VA. Only draw back down here is we are a car culture - limited public transportation unless you live downtown. I miss the metro in D.C.

Prices in Texas and Missouri depend on where you buy. New homes sell here in Texas from maybe 80 a sq ft to way over 200 a sq ft. Just depends on where in Texas you want to live. Older homes sell for both less than that and much more than that. I have lived here all my life. When I was a young child most of the people that lived here had been born here. Now most are from Chicago, New York, California and of course Mexico. There is a reason everyone has moved here. Lots of affordable land and lots of good jobs are two of the reasons.

San Antonio has a lot of areas that the houses are cheap (to us) due to the unattractiveness in that area. Also, we have 4 major military installations so to accommodate the minimal pay the government pays our soldiers we keep housing low. If you are looking in SA, stay on the Northside, preferably close to Loop 1604. If you have school age children or will, Northside ISD and Northeast ISD are our premier school districts. (They, too, have their own "ghetto" schools, but for the most part they are the best!) The other responders made mention that labor costs are cheap and that is true, especially with specific builders. My advice is to stay away from KB Homes, also formerly known as Ray Ellison, Rayco, and Kaufman and Broad. They change their name all the time for a reason: lawsuits! I hope this helps.

Haven't been there for 30 years and it was like that then too. From what I could determine it was lack of really good jobs, low wages, nice houses but the place is flat, hot, and very humid and not a lot to do except visit the Texas Book Depository and one great art museum.
I don't know how they stand it or why they are so proud of that place. They sport big white hats and have long horns on their caddies. I will say the steaks were good as was the Tex Mex food.

I live in San Diego CA prices are disgusting, rent is expensive.Even I can afford everything but still its not enough to buy a house. We get 10.00 per hour and regular house price is 350.000$ for a shitty house in a bullshit area where all bums are your neighbors. You guys get 7.25 per hour in Texas. The house which I like cost here in California for 650.000$ the same exact house costs 200000$ in Houston Texas, thats why I am moving to Houston Texas

Shhhh!!!! Housing prices are going up here because people from California are coming and buying things up!! I used to live in California (I grew up in Texas and live in Texas now, but briefly lived in California) and every time I would fly anywhere from California, I'd sit next to a person who was traveling to buy up land because all the land was "so cheap" outside California. Well, it is *not* cheap except in comparison to the crazy inflated bubble prices people are paying in California. P.S., San Antonio is really nice, you might really like it there.

Houses are cheap in Texas because the wages are low, including the labor cost of putting up a house!

OK, Let me give you the real answer. The builders of homes in Texas do not have to pay the start up fees for new schools in the area they build in. This dramatically decreases their over head expenses and helps them pass on the savings to the buyer.

Houses here are cheaper because the wages are lower in Texas. The overall cost of living is way cheaper than any where else. But the thing is, is that what you don't pay for your house you will pay in taxes. Our property taxes are very high!!!
At least we don't live in Hurricane central like the idiot below me!
