They provide an excellent way to trace things. Placing a pencil drawing, for instance, on the light box enables you to see through it well enough to be able to trace it in ink, for instance, or to make a pattern from. They are invaluable to artists.

The portable ones look like a briefcase that lights up and you view negatives and movie film on them the larger ones are like a table and CSI uses them on the show
