ty for your quick replys, its interesting to know that it seems to be a geologicically bound social custom, i havent traveled much so its always suprising to me, these things, im still curious if anyone has any real info on how this whole thing got started, and i seem to smell the whiff of people playing the low wage card as a reason, trust me, these people knew they were getting a job that payed this amount, it still doesnt consent some sort've set amount, or idea of what the proper in such, what i dont understand is just that, why is that the proper, as the lady was saying, 90% of em dont deserve it, if 10-15% is the right amount, then it should be on the bill i think, but im still terribly curious of how this originated, thanks for your responses, carry on

I think tipping developed as a way to encourage quality service. Although, i still dont understand how it ever happened that the restaurants found a legal way to lower server's minimum wage and make then soley dependant on tips for their pay. I think it started because people voluntarily started tipping for good service out of politeness, and now it has turned into an essential part of going out to eat.

Tipping is part of going out to eat at a sit-down restaurant. Your waitress/waiter is depending on your tip and you should be prepared to pay it. They work for about 2.38 an hour which does not add up to anything at the end of the week after taxes, and therefore, they depend on your tips. the general rule of thumb is that if your server does a bad job , leave them 10%. Standard is 15%, and if they did a good job, leave them 20%. also, it is polite that when you come into the resaturant with a coupon to tip onthe amount that the bill came to BEFORE the coupon was deducted. and, please remember that if the kitchen messes something up, or if the kitchen is going slow and you have to wait...it is not your servers fault if they are doing the best they can. please dont leave your server a crappy tip for something that was not their fault. if the server is rude to you... feel free to let that affect their tip. if they are not cheerful and pleasant and helpful than no one is expecting you to tip them well. but, if they are helpful, cheerful, and dont screw anything up, you should reward them for a job well done. it could make their night.

Well As a Bartender ( I prefer Mixoligist) I have done some research on tipping. It has been around for thousands of years and was probably started as a way of thanking someone for a great job done and it even today its not uncommon to tip the paper person, The garbage people, Mail people and the likes. Allthough some of that was a few years back and mostly done at xmas time . There is no real origin, It was just a nice thing to do...give your made an extra bag of salt ..
A lot of people misundrestand the "Tip". Yes most states the minimum wage for service people is vey low.2.25 hr. and The tips one makes should at least meke up the difference to be normal minimum wage or the employer must make up the difference.
Now sincesome answers you have gotten make me ask this...when you go out to eat or have drinks, Do you like great service, a smile , Prompt service????
Yes you do!
The service industry is a hard place to work. Dealing with rude people and a..holes!! Its the really nice people that make up for that!!
more things...when i go out to one of the bars i go to...I will get my drink as soon as I get to the bar or thet see me, and when i go out the the couple places I eat I will be seated at once and my order will be prompt...why? because I tip well for great service and if I dont get that high grade service I wait till I am done ( still tip good) and as for the manager and jst be nice and ask...maybe they are new on the job...or something like that and if its really bad I just never go back. BUT NEVER EVER P O YOUR SERVER!!!!
Enjoy your nights out!!!
and I as a professional, I make at least 24% of my sales in tips:) Because I am that good!!! And proud of it!!
Sorry for running on.
kudos jewlbaby

the people getting tipped.

actually, i think it has something to do with the restaurant not paying the wait staff. they are sort of like free agents, so they have to make their money from tips. the restaurant makes the food, but the server brings it to you. so you are paying for two different things. that is why servers get like $3/hr from the restaurant. if no servers, then you would have to get your own food.

For a percentage to be acceptable...Those who accept tips as a part of their wages have to be nice/as well as proficient at what they do. But if someone is not used to being nice...or looks offensive to regulars at their workplace..they could starve....A compassionate genius decided this.
