I think a professional cleaning would be best. They usually target the pet stains first, and remove them before cleaning the whole carpet. We have an outfit where I live that uses a granular cleaner. It lifts the dirt without steam or water so you can walk on the rug right away. Too much moisture from steam or shampoo actually makes the carpet pick up soil easier and faster. Frequent vacuuming helps the rug stay cleaner between all-over carpet cleaning. Try to keep Fido or Fluffy away from carpeted areas. Pet stains are difficult to remove, especially if they are left in place for a long time. If you do decide to clean the rug yourself, be sure to vacuum it thoroughly and get after the pet stains before using the rug shampooer.

I hired a machine from a local chain store several months ago. I was quite happy with the result. They supplied the cleaning product. One stain that had re-appeared soon after a previous professional job all but disappeared because I was able to go over it four times. It is still faintly there though but much less obvious. Even a hire machine gets a fantastic amount of crud out that ordinary vacuums don't touch.

If you hire a machine get it for at least two days. It is not much more expensive than for a single day. You then have plenty of time to re-do an area after it has dried. Best time is in summer and you can use a desk fan and open windows to dry the carpet quickly.

If its your home professional because if anything goes wrong you have proof.

Renting, get a steam cleaner and put mild soap in the tank.(PINE-SOL works) Make sure the water is hot and please clean your carpet first before deep cleaning.

Please use a powerful vacuum like a Kirby or 14 amp. The better you can get the dirt out the longer your carpet will stay clean. Walking around with no shoes on your carpet also prolongs the life of your carpet.

ChemDry just did mine on Monday. I had all kinds of pet stains. I am pretty happy with how it turned out and I will have them do the carpets again.
