I'm taking off my valve stem seals on my cylinder head and they are stuck on the valve guide. As I pulled them off, they tore leaving half of it on there. So I'm thinking that if I spray some type of chemical on it, i t will break down and thus make my life easier. So the ? is, what spray will eat away rubber but be safe on aluminum?

i own a repair shop, and there's nothing you can put on it to make it easier, there just old and worn out and dry rotted ,id break them away the best way i could ,either way there a mess so one way or the other don't make that much difference, good luck i hope this help,s.,,PS you can take a little bit of lacquer thinner and clean the rest of the old stuff away with it,it works pretty good.

try using some carb/choke cleaner. i haven't seen many things that will hold up against this stuff. it should be safe on aluminum but to be safe, read the label. usually it will state "do not use on..." otherwise, try some type of alcohol like rubbing alcohol. that's the reason you can't use ethanol in a lot of engines-it degrades most of the rubber seals used in the fuel system and engine. good luck. if nothing else, persistence will pay off.
