If my memory serves me correctly the intolerance was of the young ladies doing anything with their lives except getting married and haveing babies.
They were taught how to handle the ups and downs of marriage and parenting but not encouraged to further their educations i.e.: college. One young lady wanted to go to college and wanted to go to Yale. She also wanted to marry and have a family, she did not agree with the fact that she could do both.
Another intolerance portrayed in the movie was the intolerance of contraception. A teacher, who was approaching her tenure, was released from duties after supplying one of the young girls a diaphragm. The idea of premarital sex was frowned upon in those days.

the biggest intolerance is the same then as it is now with the differences of the women:
those who want to be married and those who just want to sleep with men...to be taken care of
those that want a career and those who want to be a mommy/house wife
old ways and new ways of thinking
where to stand up for what you think or to stand back and let it happen as always
