im not exactly sure what you consider death metal but there is a really good metal band called all that remains. i would recommend all the songs of their album "this darkened heart"

Dimmu Borgir from Norway
Opeth from Sweden
In Flames from Sweden
Children of Bodom from Finland
It's kind of ironic that all of them are Scandinavian... :P
I consider them good because their music is quite melodic, unlike some of the thrash-influenced grindcore.
