I don't mind yard signs at election time, I actually like to see them. They are decorations to celebrate that we soon get to once again exercise our right to vote. But who says " oh, I see a sign with a candidate's name, so I will now vote for him/her

It's mainly to show support for the canditate of your choosing. Kinda like the houses with the football team yard signs or even bumper stickers. It means your voting for that person and your proud of it.

If you go to vote and don't really know the candidates for a certain office, then you might just throw a vote for whomever's name is stuck in your head. So I think the signs make a difference with those who don't thoroughly research every part of an election. As far as presidential signs go, those are a bit silly--everyone knows who they want for president. But I can see it for the lesser offices, like school board and selectman positions.

Hopefully no one. Yards signs encourage consideration of candidates by enhancing name identification and influence voting by expressing the positions of, perhaps respected, neighbors.

Yard signs are not about convincing any ONE person to vote for a particular candidate. They are meant to build a candidate's "brand"--in other words, to get his/her name on people's minds who may only vote based on who's name they are more familiar with.

They also influence those voters who may be inclined to vote for whoever they feel most of their neighbors favor. If you lived in a neighborhood bedecked with one candidate's signs, you might think your neighbors knew more than you do and vote for their candidate...

Sadly, there are plenty of voters who choose a name based on which name is most familiar...

Gosh, I hope nobody. It hadn't occurred to me that was happening - how horrifying! I thought it was just to show support.
But now that you mention it, I bet there are people who aren't super informed and (unconsciously) make decisions based on the signs, whether someone "looks" good (i.e. probably is handsome/pretty). And that's disturbing. Yikes!

Only f...ing idiots or partisans (which are the same) would decide on an election by only reading yard signs!

Hopefully, no one does. They are there to remind us to read up on a candidate, proposition, etc, so we vote intelligently, not by knee-jerk reactions given to us by one party or another.
