The YMCA was in fact created as the Young Men's Christian Organization. Thier sister organization was the YWCA, but sadly most of those are now merged with the local YMCA's.
They still have the remnants of the Christian heritage, meaning you'll see a picture of Jesus in most of the YMCA's. And, in fact, they do maintain them as good moral places which are family-friendly, which is different than some exercise and social clubs.
Most YMCAs are open to gays and lesbians, but not gay or lesbian behavior. They also accept non-Christian members. They simply ask that you behave in accordance with generally-accepted "Christian" moral standards while you're there.

Its supposed to be for anyone. I'm mostly a pagan heathen and I felt welcome there. I enjoyed the communal sauna with just men. Sort of a brotherly communication there. People being naked or mostly makes people equal too. Very cool. I would have enjoyed it MUCH more with women there too, any ages. I know I am WAY more comfortable with nudity than most, at least here in the US.
Maybe in 50 years it will be the YWMCA with everybody welcome always. Its a kind of segragation I think. SO what if two people like each other in any way and hook up in the sauna? Is it really such a bad thing in these lonely times? Many things are easier for gay folks , most are not though.

When it was formed, it was intended to provide safe housing at a very low rate for people moving into a new area. As they were in the Depression of the 30's. Men only, to prevent immoral activity. But, like everything else in today's society, a few bad apples and perverts have changed that image. It is still a Christian organization, with moral, Christian ethics.

Well, I believe there is 1 member of the original group still alive. I know that 1 was and 1 was not. One of the black guys was not. I think the guy that played the cop was.
