prices for iPods really don't vary very much because Apple is very strict with their pricing policies. The best 2 ways I know of getting a bit of a break are by buying thru Apple's online store. Students can make purchases at a discount here...http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/routingpage.html
or you can find deals on refurbished iPods here...http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wo/0.RSLID?mco=6BE1F9C9&nclm=Certified

As far as mp3's go, I always recommend making them from your own CDs (you can do this using iTunes) because there is no copy protection on them (there is on the tunes you buy from most online stores including iTunes store) and you automatically have a back up copy in case your computer crashes or something happens to your iPod. One online store that I know of that works with iPod and doesn't have copy protection is emusic. Check them out here...http://www.emusic.com/
They currently have a trial going so you can get 25 free downloads. I hope this helps you out.

Try Yahoo! Shopping. It's great for stuff like this. It includes Amazon's and Apple's offerings plus lots of others. I've seen several review articles that called it the best comparison shopping web site. I've put two links under "Sources" below - one for general MP3 players and one for ipods. Just click on either one and it will take you right to the corresponding Yahoo! Shopping page.
