Everyone is on a budget and I assume you are also.
Buy a vacuum that changes for the carpet height if you have different types of carpeting.
Buy a Vacuum that can clean hardwood floors if you have hardwood floors.
Buy a Vacuum that has a high amp rating.
Buy a Vacuum you know how to operate, which includes changing bags or cleaning filters.
Buy a Vacuum that you can easily get the bags or filters for.
Buy a Vacuum that the cord is long enough for you.
Buy a Vacuum with stair cleaning abilities, by that I mean easy for someone to clean steps with the attachements if you have stairs.
At today's prices you can buy one and buy another one next year if you so desire

I've had a Panasonic, Hoover, Dyson, and Kenmore. A great place to compare all these brands is Sears. Plus you can use your charge card to make the purchase. I liked my Panasonic and Kenmore the best (but they were purchased years ago and I'm not sure if the quality is still there). However, I now have a Dyson and it has the best suction power of all I've ever had. Regarding the guy who talked about the warranty on the carpet, he must be selling pretty crappy carpet, because I've never had a problem and I have new carpet throughout my house.

I cannot recommend a vacuum cleaner that has no bag, unless you aren't going to be vacuuming very much. Those fill particularly fast and you constantly have to stop and empty them.
The very best vacuum that I have found is the Miele available at high end vacuum appliance stores. It runs like a horse and will last for years. It is a little pricey at about $600.00.
I hope this helps and good luck!

Patches has a good idea. Suction power is a selling point. However, air flow is the secret behind a good vacuum cleaner. You can have suction power and very little air flow which does not pick up debris. Ask about air flow and not suction and the salesperson will know you can't be fooled with their silly sales pitch about suction. You can lift a bowling ball by suction with a 1/4 inch hose but try to vacuum with a hose that size. Enough said.

Been there , done that, made a costly mistake!
I bought one of those bagless vacuums with a centre filter. Sure you don't have to buy bags for them but here is the catch those filters need to be replaced around every 6 months in order for the vacuum to not loose suction. (It say's on the filter once a year but believe me when I say if you wait a year you loose pretty much all the suction power.) The filters are around $50.00 a pop!
I now have a hoover spirit. The bags come in a pack of 6 for $12.00 which last me about 6 months.

I easily have never heard of a Henry vacuum cleanser and that i'm a vacuuming freak! i like to work out the strains in the carpet! So, you're able to be able to ask, why am I answering this query? nicely, this is to furnish you yet another selection for an excellent vacuum cleanser. i think of you is probably no longer in the States so i'm not sure despite if it somewhat is obtainable there yet while so, a Dyson is nicely worth finding into. I only at the instant bought a Dyson DC17 Animal (made for airborne dirt and dust and animal hair). It comes with a low profile head for procuring under fixtures, an upholstery attachment, a broom, crevice gadget, a mattress gadget, carpet cleansing granules and a twig for procuring out oil based stains and yet another extra beneficial brush head. And there are not any luggage to empty. you only carry it over a trash can and hit the launch button. i'm no longer able to declare adequate stable stuff approximately this vaccum. It revitalized the carpet at my domicile (in ordinary terms 3 a million/2 years previous) and at my boyfriends historic domicile (no telling how long that carpet has been in place). it form of feels to make the air in the domicile scent extra beneficial too...possibly this is as a results of fact it have been given each and all of the previous airborne dirt and dust up out of the carpet. the 1st time I vacuumed my domicile (1200 SF), I had to empty the bin thrice (crammed with airborne dirt and dust, dogs hair and a sprint carpet fuzz) and that i vaccumed it with my previous vacuum immediately formerly making use of the hot Dyson. And for my flooring without carpet, I press a button to end the beater brush from spinning so it possibilities up hair and airborne dirt and dust from the laminate flooring somewhat nicely additionally and does not clog the comb up with hair...only sucks it into the bin.

Lightweight; suction; bag or no bag your preference; edge cleaner which most vacuums have; warranty; ease of changing belt and cleaning brushes...I would get a reconditioned one of a expensive brand...one time investment.

Buy A RAINBOW. They are expensive but they last forever. The trick to the rainbow is that it uses water as a filter. It never clogs and no filters to buy. Ive seen and used them all. The new units also are a certified air purifier.
