Popup blockers will only stop web based popups. They can help somewhat, but if you are getting excessive popups, and popups even when you are offline, it means you have trojan downloaders on your machine that are calling out to deliver the pop up ads.

Try a full cleaning and dis-infection routine.

This is the one I use (it will take some time).

1. Scan for virus and remove (free online scan) with BitDefender

2. Scan for trojans and remove (free online scan) with Ewido

3. Scan for ad/spyware and remove (free download) with Spybot Search & Destroy

If you are using an older version of Windows (pre XP-SP2) you may also be getting "Messenger Service" popups which are caused by Microsoft leaving the almost never used Windows Messenger Service enabled by default. This was corrected in Windows XP- Service Pack 2.

Understand that the Windows Messenger Service is completely different from, and not in any way related to, "MSN Messenger", "Windows Live Messenger" "yahoo Messenger", or any other well-known instant messaging system. Therefore, disabling the Windows Messenger service will have no effect upon your use of any other instant messaging applications. They will continue to work without trouble.

To disable this service in older versions of Windows use the free, Shoot The Messenger from:

Good luck.

A study looked in to the effectiveness of various popular popup blockers. It found that the Google toolbar and Windows XP with SP2 (i.e. the service pack included a popup blocker for IE) did the best. However, Yahoo! toolbar failed to block 50% of popups. Sorry, I wished I saved the article so I could give you the link to it. Try the Google toolbar and/ or IE built in popup blocker. You can use more than one popup blocker at a time. Visit http://www.popuptest.com/ The website tests the effectiveness of your popup blocker. It is also a good place to start looking for free popup blockers.

If there is no spyware or trojans on your PC and you're sure that it is the Pop-ups (you can determine it by inspecting the ads itself)

Then you should use another Pop-up blocker. As far as my knowledge, MS-Internet Explorer 6.0 or greater has a built-in Popup blocker and it works Great
(Because its a browser who executes the Pop-up codes and displays pop-ups, It is the only one who can control it better that softwares. Yahoo pop-up blocker is an Plug-in for IE i.e a software too)

Apart from that, a Google toolbar also got a good popu-up blocker system. you can download it from http://toolbar.google.com

Its the pop-up blocker itself not the computer,
You need to install the google pop-up blocker, or even the ninemsn pop-up blocker.

Personal experince dictates that Yahoo has a really really poor pop-up blocker.
Switch to Google if you can, I did I can now get all of the emails sent to me, stop pesky little pop-up blockers, and annoying little poeple who have too much time on their hands

Okay two things here if you had a Mac you would never see a pop up at all, and I mean never. With any PC you will need at least two pop up blocker if not more.

You probably got alot of spyware. Try running a clean up program like spy-bot. Its free and you can download it from their site. I've also tried ewido but it misses certain spyware programs. Spy-bot gets rid of all malware. This should solve your problem!

You can get it at this address:

It is safe to download, I've been using it for a while and it is great!
